The 12th President of the United States. Taylor was the first professional soldier to become
President, being elected as a result of his military victories in the Mexican War. His Presidency
was brief (16 months) and his accomplishments few. However, he took a strong stand against the
threat of Souther secession over the slavery question, though a Southerner and a slaveholder
himself.

While not considered a brillian general, Taylor was an able commander, highly respected by his
troops. They affectionately reffered to him as "Old Rough and Ready," alluding both to his careless informal style of dress and to his cool courage and ireon determination in battle.

Zachery Taylor was born in Orange County, Virginia, on November 24, 1784. He was the third child (of eight surviving children) born to Colonel Richard Taylor and Sarah Strother Taylor. In 1785 the family moved to Kentucky. There young Taylor grew up on the family plantation near Louisville. He receive little formal education. He spent his early adult years working on the plantation, except for a brief service with the Kentucky militia in 1806.

Taylor married Margaret Mackall Smith (1788-1852), the daughter of a Continental Army major, in 1810. The Taylors had six children, four of whom survived to adulthood-Ann, Sarah, Mary Elizabeth, and Richard. During her husband's long army career, Mrs. Taylor followed him from on frontier post to another. As First Lady, she rarely made public appearances.
